In listing the assembly of nuns, refuting the old interpretation, regarding “furthermore, there is no text” and so forth: at the end of the bhikṣu assembly, it concludes, “Thus they were known to the assembly, so they can be called ‘many’”; at the end of the text on trainees and beyond-training, there is no such conclusion, so looking back to the previous “many,” it can only be called “few.” In the two passages on the nun assembly, there are no words stating that they were known to the assembly beforehand, nor is there anything later against which they could be regarded as few; therefore it says there is no text. Regarding “the meaning is untenable”: the bhikṣu assembly is judged as having many or few acquaintances in terms of praising virtue or not praising virtue, listing names or not listing names, the size of numbers, and having a conclusion or lacking a conclusion. Now in the nun assembly, it only designates the names of the leaders of the two assemblies; after the two persons, it merely says “six thousand” and “also accompanied by their retinues,” completely lacking any concluding listing. How could it be that the six thousand were known to others, while simply saying “retinues” means they were not known to others? It does not even parallel the concealing of names and hiding of virtues above; how could it be called “few”? Regarding “major and minor”: the old calling them major and minor fame and so forth has already been refuted above. Furthermore, “Yaśodharā” is translated here as “having fame”; how could one conversely take her as having no fame? (and so forth). Both nuns lack the treatment in terms of teachings; according to the pattern, it should be present, and in terms of the saṃgha, it should also fully possess the four teachings and five flavors.
