「姓頗羅墮」等者，真諦譯也。婆羅門中之一姓也。《本行集》翻重幢，重字平聲，一切諸佛皆不在餘二賤姓故，尚尊貴時則在剎利，尚多聞時在婆羅門。又濁難伏時則在剎利，清易調時在婆羅門。

As for "clan name Bhāradvāja" and so forth: this was translated by Paramārtha. It is one of the clans among the Brahmins. The *Abhiniṣkramaṇa-sūtra* translates it as "Layered Banner," the word "layered" being in the level tone. Because all buddhas are never born into the other two lowly castes, when nobility is esteemed, they are among the kṣatriyas; when erudition is esteemed, they are among the brahmins. Moreover, when defilements make beings difficult to subdue, they are among the kṣatriyas; when purity makes beings easy to tame, they are among the brahmins.
