Ninth, on the clarification of the provisional and the real attaining benefit, there are six [parts]: First, he presents the old interpretation. In stating "One says," there must have been many old interpretations, but because one among them contradicts the text, he provisionally mentions only this one. Next, from "Now to clarify" onward is the correct explanation. In the expression "adjacent to the perfect," "perfect" means fully complete, being close to the stage of fullness and adjacent to wondrous awakening. The expression "the utmost limit" merely brings to light being adjacent to the perfect. Third, from "The reason why" onward clarifies that the attainment of benefit is due to the [buddha-]land. From "The text says" onward cites proof. In the expression "the meritorious work of transformation," while in the traces of influential figures there was already the benefit of transformation, the progressive advancement along the path before and after is precisely the profound benefit; this is because the provisional figures everywhere attained profound benefit. Fifth, from "Therefore, through a single sound" onward establishes the principle: it is not necessarily the case that all must wait until the [chapter on] the "Life Span"; therefore it says "a single sound." Furthermore, as for the esoteric benefit, it is fitting to hear of the long and distant [past]; since time and place are not the same, the manifest and esoteric each differ, which is why the note says "and so forth." Sixth, from "Moreover, our..." onward directly proves the passage on influential figures attaining benefit; if there were no benefit to oneself, why would one speak of wishing to attain it?
