"The obstacles of the five defilements are manifold": the intensification of the five defilements indicates that they possess both [delusions of] views and cultivation; furthermore, because they add clinging and arrogance, their roots are called deep. Sinful obstacles are the root and might not yet be deep, so only by adding clinging and arrogance are they termed deep. "Twigs and leaves, fine tips": if one truly attains the fruit, it is like a large root timber capable of being used as a vessel; but merely grasping at the twigs and leaves, considering them capable, and belittling the root, claiming equality or superiority—this is called overweening arrogance. "Clinging to the skillful means of skillful means": the four fruits of the Small Vehicle are already skillful means; furthermore, at heat and summit, clinging to them as the true ultimate—one should know that the overweeningly arrogant are not completely devoid of Dharma, but merely, on the basis of a shallow stage, deem themselves superior and are arrogant toward others; hence they are called overweeningly arrogant. "Four requests": taking the text of receiving the instruction as equivalent in principle to one request, together with the previous ones they make four.
