4.72

非勝非劣。若勝天人應得，若劣地獄應得，以其道有自爾力故。準斯誠教，可證世人設六道者不可盡得，此是梁武見江東人多好淫祀，故以相似佛法權宜替之。

Neither superior nor inferior. If superior, devas and humans should obtain it; if inferior, the hells should obtain it; this is because each path has its own spontaneous power. In accordance with this authentic teaching, one can verify that when people of the world arrange [offerings] for the six paths, they cannot all obtain them. This was because Emperor Wu of Liang saw that people east of the Yangtze River mostly favored licentious sacrifices, and therefore used semblance Buddhadharma as an expedient to replace them.
