Regarding "Question: Formerly emerging from the burning house..." and so forth: raising the "Chapter on Parables" to illuminate the present, it says there that the sons went to their father, wishing, "Please give us the three kinds of jeweled carts"; how can it be said now that capacity and so on seek the real? The intent of the answer is: before emerging they heard the promise; having emerged, they did not see the promised carts, but only saw the person who made the promise. Therefore, from that person they sought what was formerly promised. Not giving what was promised must have an alternative course; therefore seeking the past in the present originally seeks an alternative intention. Now it is asked: in the Deer Park, emerging from the house, they only held to the small fruit; when did they ever seek carts? Answer: in the Dharma exposition, reaching the Deer Park is functionally emerging from the house; further traversing the two flavors, the two seekings were held within the heart. But the parable is brief and encompasses what is long, its meaning extending to the beginning of the Lotus [Sūtra]. Therefore, in the parable, the sons going to the father to seek carts, and him giving them, yet bestowing the great, that parabolic intent simultaneously encompasses the two kinds of ghee. Only in the parable of faith and understanding does the extended [narrative] first open the essential lifespan. Therefore, the text of the Chapter on Parables implicitly encompasses the three seekings; how could this be equated with Guāngzhái?
