The answer, 'distinguishing by four propositions,' pairs faculties with lands; both obstruct and do not obstruct, differing only in being light or heavy. Pairing lands with faculties as sharp or dull forms four propositions. The first proposition is used to answer the Avataṃsaka; the last proposition answers the meaning of not teaching the Great at the beginning of the gradual [teachings]; the middle two propositions merely clarify differences in lands. That is to say, neither the first nor the last obstructs the Great; it is merely that due to sharpness and dullness, the beginning and end differ: because faculties were dull and obstructions heavy, the small was taught first, saying that defilements can obstruct. Therefore, in terms of the four propositions, none obstructs the Great; so the question of obstructing the Great was merely an initial, provisional remark.
