As for 'great teaching' and so forth: because the earlier great teaching was swift, it says 'dispatched at once'; to protect the lesser aspiration, it says 'spoke gently.' Regarding 'doubled' and so forth: within this are two explanations. First, taking the precepts and wholesome [deeds] versus the truths and causes [and conditions] as one doubling: the precepts and wholesome [deeds] are in [the realm of] desire, while the truths and causes [and conditions] transcend the realms. Next, under 'also, the non-Buddhists,' the defiled versus the undefiled constitutes one doubling; it is also that the internal and external two antidotes differ, which is called a doubling. The six practices do not bring about permanent eradication, so it merely says 'subdued,' as briefly treated in the sixth fascicle of the Notes on the Great Calming and Contemplation. As for 'if the impoverished son consents' and so forth: it must say 'if' in contrast to his not consenting; the ceremonial conversion accommodates and complies with the beings' feelings, and so it says 'also.' Regarding 'does not discuss purifying the buddha-lands': the meaning of purifying the buddha-lands is briefly as the seventeen horizontal phrases and thirteen vertical phrases in the 'Buddha-Land Chapter' of the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa, and extensively as explained in the dedicating [of merit] section of the Avataṃsaka; texts such as the Nirvāṇa, Mahāsaṃnipāta, and Prajñāpāramitā-śāstra all clarify it fully. The Hīnayāna lacks this and merely has them remove dung; therefore, only after receiving prediction do they begin to cultivate it, forming karmic connections with living beings, which is not concerned with the completeness of practice. From 'two vehicles' to 'first take': because he first asks for the price, it says 'first take'; it does not mean he has already received it, which is why it says 'yearning for the fruit.' As for 'his father saw the son' and so forth:
