8.170

示彼此眾知經功力，識稟教益故須云來，不往而往不來而來，皆為利物何須此難？故知他土未必見來，彼不見來此不見去，不來不去而移事灼然。如淨名足指按地，是時大眾自見坐寶蓮華，而土穢如故。

It is to show both assemblies the power of the sūtra and make them recognize the benefit of receiving the teaching, so it was necessary to say 'came.' Going without going, coming without coming—both are for the benefit of beings; why is this objection needed? Thus we know that other lands do not necessarily see him come; that [place] does not see him come, and this [place] does not see him go; yet without coming or going, the matter of shifting is manifest. Just as when Vimalakīrti pressed the earth with his toe, at that time the great assembly saw themselves seated on jeweled lotuses, while the land remained defiled as before.
