8.70

「二人在上數中」者，在多知識中列，今之得記何為在此？答中總論得記，在千二百中仍是下根中之上流耳。雖有多人所識，意為引下根故也。若爾不答上問，問意何不同上周，今答中但云下中之上，如何稱問？然非上者，為引實故、四悉檀故。

Regarding "The two people were among the number above": they were listed among the many acquaintances, so why is their receiving of prophecy placed here? In the answer, it discusses their receiving of prophecy generally: within the one thousand two hundred, they are still the upper stream among those of lower faculties. Although they were known by many people, the intention was to lead those of lower faculties. If so, it does not answer the question above: the intention of the question was, why was it not the same as the upper cycle? Now the answer merely says "the highest among the lower," so how does this fit the question? However, they were not among the upper because of guiding to the real, and because of the four siddhāntas.
