In the combined explanation, the phrase 'three gates' means that the first two pertain to phenomena and the latter one pertains to principle; phenomena and principle are both objects of delusion. First, 'in terms of the suffering fruit': therefore the gate of compassion is used, because suffering must be eradicated. Next, 'in terms of fetters and karma': therefore the gate of patience is used, because it is departed from based on principle. Third, 'in terms of the realm of truth': therefore the gate of emptiness is used, because one dwells well in emptiness. The third, purely 'in terms of principle': principle is indeed the principle of truth, hence it is in terms of the three truths, which is precisely being endowed with the three truths as in the third above. The phrase 'et cetera' means that one should use many kinds of three dharmas to explain these three in correspondence, making them perfectly fused, unimpeded, and sovereign, so that one recognizes the comprehensive aspect of the teachings subsumed in this text. Therefore, below, generally in terms of the teachings, it says: 'Whenever there are many kinds of explanations of the chapter, all are in terms of the perfect teaching.'
