Under "if one wishes": next, with respect to the speaker, being able to broadly distinguish each single mental dharma. "A month, four months, up to a year": although the text of the mental faculty is cited, this is not yet the stage of purity of the six faculties; for now it is treated in terms of contemplation. Under "although not yet": treated in terms of persons, as can be seen. Citing the Great Sūtra: this first single thought precisely corresponds to "hearing little and understanding much," also called "understanding little and hearing much"; hence it is cited for now to reprove those who hear much but do not understand the meaning. "Will be explained later": in the sixth scroll. The initial mention of "upper and lower grades of teachers" is differentiated solely in terms of ordinary ranks. "Ten kinds of offerings": first, flowers; second, incense; third, necklaces; fourth, powdered incense; fifth, paste incense; sixth, burning incense; seventh, banners and canopies; eighth, clothing; ninth, music and dance; and tenth, joined palms. Music is evaluated as before. Next, from "Medicine King" to "this person voluntarily abandons purity": because drawn by compassionate vows, they are still born of karma without yet possessing transformative response; vows are conjoined with karma, fully explained under "entourage" in the Profound Meaning. Regarding "as the Treatise on the Great [Perfection of Wisdom] says, having wisdom without hearing", and so on: this verse and the verse on the four Dharma masters are fully explained in the Notes on the Great Calming and Contemplation, fascicle one. Thus one knows that for the sake of propagating the Dharma, one is also permitted to broadly study differing doctrines within the inner teaching to assist the correct teaching. In the world, some study secular classics claiming to assist the correct [teaching], yet on the contrary submerge the supreme principle. Under "one should know this person": like a king's envoy delivering a command, if conforming to the sovereign's intent, one earns the name "envoy" and receives the title of the one dispatched. First, under "the sūtra is": explaining the Tathāgata as the dispatcher, the dispatcher being the teaching. Next, under "today": explaining the dispatched, the dispatched being the person.
