Second, below "the sun shines," regarding "opening and combining, not opening and not combining": compared to the Hinayāna, the Huayan is temporarily named "not opening"; because it still carries the gradual, it is named "not combining." Those who did not enter in that [sūtra] are now made to enter at present; further opening the small, seasoned by the three flavors, the present sūtra only then combines them. As for the "five flavors," this treats both the beginning and the end together; moreover, what was not combined there is also combined now. Thus we know that in that sūtra, opening was also not pervasive because suited capacities were insufficient, and combining was also not complete because provisional traces were still retained. One should know that its opening is also this opening, but this combining is also no different from that combining; the affairs of conversion of the one Buddha have both sameness and difference clearly evident. It is only that there, having no Hinayāna capacities at the beginning, it was called sudden; from after opening the Hinayāna, it is called the gradual returning to the sudden. Although opening and combining are distinct, the two sudden [teachings] are not different.
