Next, within the explanation, first regarding "initial seeing and present seeing": in the Huayan it was initial seeing; the sūtra text itself says, "He initially attained right awakening." The subsequent text merely explains extensively the characteristics of causes and effects, and the shared continuity of environmental and primary rewards. Therefore, within that single sūtra there are explicit texts in three places—namely, the beginning of the "Chapter on the Lords of the World," the beginning of the "Chapter on Names," and the beginning of the "Chapter on the Ten Concentrations"—all saying, "In the place of bodhi, he initially attained right awakening." Because attaining was initial, those who saw were the first. Now this is the Lotus Sūtra, which opens the buddha's knowledge and vision at the Royal City [Rājagṛha]; between the subject that sees and the object that is seen, how could there be any difference in realm and wisdom?
