Next, the proper explanation of the chapter title has two parts: first, general; second, specific. In the first, it first explains “Tathāgata” and next explains “Life Span.” What is first called a “general title” refers provisionally to the single name “Tathāgata,” not that the remaining nine [titles] are absent; the first title is the most prominent, as fully explained below. It comprehensively pervades the three bodies and is fully endowed with the ten titles, as briefly explained in the second fascicle of the Śamatha-vipaśyanā. Next, in explaining “life span,” “evaluating and measuring” refers to measuring belonging to life, hence it is called “evaluating and measuring”; therefore, the character “span (measure)” is explained as “evaluating and measuring the three buddhas of the ten directions and the three times,” and so forth. Next, the passage beginning “Now properly…” concludes by returning to the intent of the chapter, pointing to the original buddha of the present [sūtra]. Why is this so? Because the name “Tathāgata” is general, and “Life Span” is also thus, and cannot be restricted; therefore, it must first be treated generally. Although the title's name is general, its intent is restricted to the origin, and hence it concludes by returning [to it].
