9.71

今云助者，舉況而已，恐倚圓蔑偏。然弘經者隨其行位，若始行者具如今文不以小答，若深位人始未弘法，必以生滅等三方能顯於圓頓，具如《止觀》諸文皆先漸後頓。

What is now called "assisting" is merely raising an analogy, out of concern that one might rely on the perfect and disparage the one-sided. However, propagators of the sūtra accord with their stage of practice: if a beginner, then fully like the present text, one does not reply with the small; if a person of deep stage who has never yet propagated the Dharma, one must use the three [teachings] of arising and ceasing, and so forth, in order to reveal the perfect and sudden—fully as in the various passages of the Mohe zhiguan, where all proceed first through the gradual and later the sudden.
