Answer: There are two kinds of non-knowing: first, not knowing the sameness; second, not knowing the difference. Not knowing the sameness means not knowing that the Tathāgata, whether in bodily form or in teaching, opens the single Way. Not knowing the difference means not knowing that sentient beings of the five vehicles develop differences according to their faculties. Just as herbs and trees not knowing the single cloud and single rain is called not knowing the sameness, and not knowing of themselves their differences of superior, middling, and inferior is called not knowing the difference. Now Kāśyapa and his peers are able to know both sameness and difference. Now, wishing to cite and praise people of middling capacity and validate what they have comprehended, he therefore preaches this sūtra.
