Twentieth is the pair of compassion and wisdom. The Avataṃsaka says: "Guanyin expounded the Great Compassion Sūtra, the practice of radiant light." Compassion desires to rescue; the practice of radiant light is wisdom, which is able to rescue. Mundane parents see their child suffer and desire to rescue, but lacking wisdom, they cannot rescue and deliver. Mundane physicians have wisdom and are able to rescue, but lacking a mind of compassion, they do not desire to rescue. The bodhisattva possesses compassion and thus desires to rescue, and possesses wisdom and thus is able to uproot. Furthermore, a newly practicing bodhisattva desires to rescue, but lacking the power of the path, cannot rescue; those of the two vehicles have the power of the path and are able to rescue, but lacking compassion, do not desire to uproot. Guanyin practices compassion and wisdom jointly: having compassion, he desires to rescue; having wisdom, he is able to uproot.
