Second, as for 'origin and trace', Avalokiteśvara is the dharmakāya, who, dwelling in the ground of the dharmakāya, observes the faculties and conditions of beings. The Universal Gate is the response body; because the ground of the dharmakāya illuminates conditions, it extends responses to rescue and deliver. As the Avataṃsaka says: 'The king of garuḍas ascends into the sky and, with pure eyes, observes the nāgas in the great ocean whose lives are destined to end; he immediately strikes the water with both wings, parting it in two, and seizes them. Bodhisattvas, with the wisdom-eye of the dharmakāya, observe the empty space of the dharmadhātu, and seeing sentient beings who should be delivered, strike the ocean of saṃsāra with the two wings of real wisdom and skillful means to deliver them.' As it is said: 'Without origin there is nothing to extend traces; without traces there is nothing to reveal origin. Although origin and trace differ, their inconceivable unity remains.' Through this origin and trace, the correct Dharma Lotus of neither origin nor trace is opened.
