The seventh master stated: "Since it is named 'Wondrous Dharma,' it takes the Wondrous Dharma Lotus as its central tenet. The 'Wondrous Dharma' is precisely the fundamental, real dharmatā attained by the Buddha. This dharmatā is not affected by the defilements of delusion, nor is it identical with delusion; it is named 'pure.' Because it is pure in this way, it is called 'wondrous.' Therefore, taking this as the title, it is forthwith taken as the central tenet. As for 'lotus flower,' as cited before from the Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra, it takes the multitude of virtues as the flower, and does not use the worldly lotus flower." Critique: Examining this master's learning, it originated in this land, claiming that the eighth consciousness is intrinsically pure in nature, also named the intrinsically pure nirvāṇa, and took it to be the Wondrous Dharma. Since it is said to be that which is attained by the Buddha, it is still the meaning of the result, identical to the previous critique. Furthermore, both the Mahāyānasaṃgraha composed by Bodhisattva Asaṅga and the Treatise on the Eighteen Emptinesses composed by Vasu[bandhu] state that the eighth consciousness is a false consciousness, meaning that it is the root of saṃsāra. The Dilun masters of earlier generations took it to be the buddha-nature, calling it the ultimate reality. In the past, before the Prajñā[pāramitā scriptures] had been translated, Master [Hui]yuan had already awakened to true emptiness; when the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra was not yet complete, Master [Dao]sheng had already illuminated and known the buddha-nature. The various Dilun masters should feel ashamed before their foresight! Moreover, what this sūtra brings forth does not directly clarify the eighth consciousness; the meaning of the eighth consciousness belongs properly to other treatises.
