Answer: The masters of the abhidharma, the Daśabhūmika masters, and the Lotus masters do not have this meaning, so they do not explain it. Now, in clarifying this meaning, there can be four arrangements: first, both the six perfections and the factors of awakening are non-attainment, hence both are proximate; second, both are attainment, hence both are remote; third, the non-attainment six perfections are proximate, and the attainment factors of awakening are remote; fourth, the non-attainment factors of awakening are proximate, and the attainment six perfections are remote. Now, in clarifying that the six perfections are remote and the factors of awakening are proximate, it is to interpret the sūtra passage of the chapter "Non-Arising." The sūtra text says: "There are worldly six perfections and supramundane six perfections; the factors of awakening clarify only the supramundane and do not clarify the worldly." The author of the treatise explained this single meaning, and therefore clarified that the six perfections are remote and the factors of awakening are proximate.
