Answer: It has two meanings. First, sentient beings' fundamental possession of the knowledge and vision of the buddhas is named the cause; externally relying on the Buddha's preaching of the one vehicle teaching to reveal the meaning of sentient beings' fundamentally possessed knowledge and vision is named the condition; because causes and conditions are complete, it is called opening. If sentient beings lacked the knowledge and vision of the buddhas, although there were the teaching gate, what would be opened? Although they possess the knowledge and vision, if there were no Buddhist teaching, how could it be opened? Therefore, the Buddhist teaching is that which can open, and the knowledge and vision of the buddhas is that which is opened. Second, causes and conditions is precisely 'the reason'. For what reason do all the buddhas of the three periods appear in the world? Precisely for the causes and conditions of the great matter of opening, showing, awakening, and entering the knowledge and vision of all buddhas do they appear in the world.
