Fifth is the prophecies of the two periods. There is when a Buddha is present in the world and bestows prophecy upon them, and there is when he prophetically bestows prophecy in advance upon people after the Buddha's extinction. As the "Chapter on the Conjured City" says: "After my extinction there will further be disciples born in other lands who, hearing the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra, will be able to attain the Buddha path." Sixth is the two kinds of present and past. In the past, prophecy of becoming a Buddha was only bestowed on bodhisattvas, and prophecy was not yet bestowed on śrāvakas; now prophecy is bestowed on bodhisattvas, and prophecy is also given to the two vehicles. Seventh is the two kinds of prophecies for the good and the evil, and so forth: prophecy was not given to an evil person like Devadatta, but now for the first time prophecy is given to him. Eighth is the prophecy of becoming a Buddha in the present body and not becoming a Buddha in the present body: in the past it was explained that women could not become Buddhas in their present bodies; now prophecy is given of becoming a Buddha in the present body, as with the dragon girl and others.
