Second, clarifying the differences in the names of the four practices. Guangzhai says: first, the practice of empty wisdom; second, the practice of preaching the Dharma; third, the practice of leaving faults behind; fourth, the practice of loving-kindness and compassion. It is only because the first practice distinguishes empty wisdom, which the latter three do not clarify, that the first is named the practice of empty wisdom. In the second practice, preaching the Dharma is extensively clarified; the third practice also contains preaching the Dharma, but the meaning of preaching the Dharma is brief, so the second is named the practice of preaching the Dharma. In the third practice, leaving faults behind is extensively clarified, while other texts mention it little, so the third is named the practice of leaving faults behind. The fourth extensively distinguishes loving-kindness and compassion, so it is named the practice of loving-kindness and compassion; the third also has loving-kindness and compassion, but the text on loving-kindness and compassion is brief, so it is not named the practice of loving-kindness and compassion. Master Daosheng and the annotated sūtras list the names of the four practices: first, the practice of empty stillness; second, the practice of leaving arrogance behind; third, the practice of leaving jealousy behind; fourth, the practice of loving-kindness and compassion. Master Daosheng did not make preaching the Dharma a distinct single practice because the verses below state, 'Abiding peacefully in the four dharmas, one then preaches the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra'—this clarifies that internally one abides in the four dharmas and externally one preaches the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra, so he did not take preaching the Dharma as a single practice. We now adopt what Master Daosheng taught.
