Answer: The "Welling Forth" [chapter] says: "I, at the city of Gayā, only then transformed and saved them." Is this not pointing directly to recent Gayā as the long past? Since Gayā is pointed to as the long past, the long past is also pointed to as Gayā. Master Daosheng precisely employed this idea, saying: "If one definitively determines that long lifespan, then Gayā is it. If Gayā is it, it is no longer Gayā. Since Gayā is negated, how could that length alone be affirmed? Wishing to reveal neither long nor short, length and shortness are both extinguished, and only then do long past and recent adapt to transform [beings]." Furthermore, in the Great Scripture, Kāśyapa repeatedly objected: We presently see that this body is impermanent. The Tathāgata responded in turn: This body is permanent. He also said: "My present body is precisely the dharmakāya, not formed of flesh and blood." The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa says: "The Buddha's body is precisely the dharmakāya." Such scriptures as these are all uniting without opening.
