Someone says: Severing the delusions of seeing the truth is one hundred; severing the five lower fetters is two hundred; severing the five higher fetters is three hundred; severing the afflictions [as numerous as] sands of the Ganges is four hundred; and severing ignorance is five hundred. Appraising this: Not so. The first fruition overthrows the seeing of truths across the three realms, having already crossed half of the three hundred; it should not be said to be one hundred. Furthermore, without yet having severed the thinking delusions of the desire realm, one has not yet crossed one hundred. It either overshoots or falls short. Furthermore, the sūtra explains the three realms as the burning house; the two vehicles exiting the burning house is crossing three hundred; one should not hold this interpretation. Matching four hundred to the sands of the Ganges and five hundred to ignorance, which again correlates them with stages, incurs the same flaw as the appraisal above.
