"Attained their own benefit" is, secondly, praising what was attained. Once defilements are exhausted, they immediately attain the nirvāṇa of analytical cessation. The fruit of nirvāṇa belongs only to arhats and does not belong to the lower three fruits, so it is called "their own benefit." Therefore the *Vibhāṣā* says: "The designation of liberation is common to both trainees and adepts; the title of nirvāṇa resides exclusively with adepts." The meaning of the *Fahua lun* is also the same: realizing nirvāṇa is called "their own benefit." Moreover, worldly wealth is shared among the five families and is not called one's own benefit; the supramundane jewel belongs solely to the practitioner, so it is called one's own benefit. Furthermore, bodhisattvas cultivate practices solely to rescue others, whereas the two vehicles cultivate virtues solely for themselves; hence it is called "their own benefit."
