Regarding "exhausted all fetters of existence," this is the second pair clarifying attainment and relinquishment. "Existence" refers to the three existences; "fetters" are precisely the fetters that induce the future three existences. Because they exhausted the fetters that induce the three existences, and because the fetters are exhausted, the three existences are also exhausted; hence it says "exhausted all fetters of existence." The *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* says: "'Fetters' refers to the nine fetters: greed, hatred, doubt, conceit, and ignorance—these five dull envoys constitute five fetters; view of individuality, false view, and extreme view—these three views constitute the fetter of views; attachment to precepts and attachment to views constitute the fetter of attachment, combining the five sharp [views] into two fetters. Along with stinginess and jealousy from among the ten entanglements, they constitute the nine fetters."
