"Pūrṇa" is translated as "Full" (Mǎn). He was the son of a brahmin in Rājagṛha. His grandparents took his parents to the riverbank to sacrifice to the gods and pray for a son, setting out flowers and incense in offering to Brahmā and reciting various mantras. That night his mother dreamed that she saw someone holding a vessel filled with assorted jewels and presenting it to her. She placed it before her abdomen, and the jeweled vessel suddenly entered her womb. When she awoke, she related this to her husband. The husband answered his wife, saying, "It is surely Brahmā who has given you a son; this son will later possess the jeweled vessel [of the Dharma] and be capable of knowing everything." On account of this she subsequently gave birth to a son, who was extremely intelligent and thoroughly mastered all worldly arts. After leaving home, he attained arhatship. When the Buddha preached the Dharma, he was able to recite and uphold it; he was skilled at understanding its meaning and subduing all non-Buddhists. He was named from the two circumstances of the dream of the jeweled vessel and his knowledge; hence he was called "Full". "Maitrāyaṇī" is translated here as "Benevolent Practice" (Cíxíng). Among the four Vedas there is a chapter by this name, which his mother recited; she was named from what she recited, hence called "Benevolent Practice". "-nī" is translated as "woman"; in India a woman is called "-nī" and a man is called "-na". But because there were many named Pūrṇa, he was distinguished by his mother's name. The general meaning is: "Full" is the son of the woman of Benevolent Practice. The older rendering said that "Pūrṇa" did not differ from the above, while "Maitrāyaṇī" is translated here as "good friend" (kalyāṇamitra). Elsewhere he is also called "Son of the Fulfillment of Vows" (Mǎnyuànzǐ).
