"Subhūti" is translated here as "Born of Emptiness" (Kōngshēng). Because at the time of his birth all things became empty, a physiognomist said, "This boy will surely be foremost in understanding emptiness," so he was named "Born of Emptiness"; he is also called "Auspicious Goodness" (Shànjí). In the country of Śrāvastī there was an elder named Kuryu (Kulya) who had no son, prayed to heavenly deities, and obtained him. Later, having grown up, he requested the Buddha to let him leave the household life, and following the Buddha to the Jetavana monastery, he became a monk.
