The Nirvāṇa Sūtra states: 'The oil-presser (tilapāyin) does not actually eat oil, yet is arbitrarily named an oil-eater; nirvāṇa is likewise: within what lacks name and mark, it is explained by arbitrarily applying name and mark.' Nirvāṇa is the dharma that is realized; since it lacks names and yet names are arbitrarily established, the person who realizes the Way also lacks names and has names arbitrarily established. This is merely a preliminary explanation, still insufficient to distinguish between internal [Buddhism] and external [teachings]. However, the ultimate person is neither named nor unnamed, yet capable of being named and capable of being unnamed; though capable of being named and capable of being unnamed, he does not move from the mark of being neither named nor unnamed. Thus the heavenly maiden interrogated Śāriputra: 'Although you know that liberation has no name, you have not realized that names are themselves liberation.' The same applies here.
