第一、立名意門者，《涅槃經》云「低羅婆姨實不食油強名食油，涅槃亦爾，實無名相強名相說」。涅槃即是法花之異名，涅槃既無名相強名相說，法花亦無名相強名相說。所以強名相說者，欲令眾生因名以悟理、因理以起行、因行以得解脫故也。

First, as for the section on the intention of establishing the name: the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'The tailapāyikā does not actually consume oil, but is arbitrarily named an oil-consumer; nirvāṇa is likewise: it actually has no names or characteristics, yet is arbitrarily spoken of in terms of names and characteristics.' Nirvāṇa is simply another name for the Lotus Sūtra; since nirvāṇa has no names or characteristics yet is arbitrarily spoken of in terms of names and characteristics, the Lotus Sūtra likewise has no names or characteristics yet is arbitrarily spoken of in terms of names and characteristics. The reason it is arbitrarily spoken of in terms of names and characteristics is that [the Buddha] wishes to cause sentient beings to awaken to the principle by means of the name, to give rise to practice by means of the principle, and to attain liberation by means of the practice.
