Kiṃnara translates here as “doubtful spirit” and also as “man-yet-not-man.” Their form resembles a human, but their head has a single horn. Those who doubt say, “Is it a man or not a man?” and this was consequently adopted as their name. The king of the kiṃnaras is named Drumā; he played the lute and praised the Buddha, to the point that even Kāśyapa could not compose himself. The term “Dharma” means that he plays the music of the Four Noble Truths. “Wonderful Dharma” means that he plays the music of the twelve links of dependent origination. “Great Dharma” means that he plays the music of the six pāramitās. “Upholding the Dharma” means that he collectively maintains the above three teachings, which is playing the melodies of dhāraṇī.
