“Gandharva” translates here as “fragrance-skandha,” because of their subtle ethereal nature they feed on fragrance, and their bodies also constantly emit fragrance; hence they are named fragrance-skandha. The Dà zhìdù lùn states: “The king of the gandharvas is named Drumā, which translates as tree. He dwells on the earth within the ten jewel mountains. When the devas wish to make music, an unusual sign appears on his body, and he immediately flies up to heaven, taking turns with the kiṃnaras going up and down.” First, “Music” refers to soundless music. Next is music with sound; next is the superior among soundless music; next is the superior among music with sound.
