「各禮佛足退坐一面」者，《智度論》云「俗人是客，來至佛所，是故聽坐；聲聞菩薩位居弟子，是故侍立。」亦可大眾集竟，今總結眾集儀則，故云禮佛而坐也。

"Each bowed down at the Buddha's feet and withdrew to sit to one side": the Da zhidu lun says, "Laypeople are guests who come to where the Buddha is, and are therefore permitted to sit; śrāvakas and bodhisattvas hold the position of disciples, and therefore stand in attendance." It may also be that the great assembly having fully gathered, it now summarizes the etiquette of the assembly's gathering, hence saying they bowed to the Buddha and sat.
