There are six kinds of people who cannot give rise to faith: 1. Sentient beings who give rise to craving, deeply attached to worldly pleasures, cannot receive it with faith. 2. Those who give rise to views, approving of themselves and rejecting others, also do not give rise to faith. 3. People who seek the two vehicles, mistaking fish eyes for real pearls, or grasping their swords when presented with a luminescent jewel—hence in India followers of the Great and Lesser Vehicles divide the river to drink—when the ekayāna is preached, do not give rise to faith and acceptance. 4. Those who think the Lotus teaching is still impermanent, and upon hearing the preaching of permanence do not give rise to faith and acceptance. 5. Those who think this scripture explains permanence only under concealed characteristics, and upon hearing an explicit explanation of permanence do not give rise to faith and acceptance. 6. Those who think this scripture explicitly explains permanence and cling to it as an eternalist view, and upon hearing the preaching of the path of quiescence as neither permanent nor impermanent, also do not give rise to faith. Therefore, the Apparition of the Jeweled Stūpa Chapter states: 'Taking hold of empty space is not sufficient to be difficult; / To believe, accept, write, and uphold it is called truly not easy.' These words are verified! Now, if one is free from the above faults and the mind has nothing upon which to depend, only then can one receive it with faith.
