They mutually interpenetrate. Just as the ear universally hears both pleasant and unpleasant sounds, the tongue also exquisitely distinguishes all tastes; it is merely an interchangeable praise. Furthermore, ordinary people cannot hear sounds from afar, but now [the sūtra] praises the power of upholding the sūtra to hear from afar; ordinary people cannot obtain superior flavors, but it praises the power of the person upholding the sūtra to obtain superior flavors. Moreover, sounds do not nourish the body, so they do not need to be transformed, whereas flavors directly sustain physical substance, so they must be transformed. Within food all the sense objects and flavors are complete; since the sense objects are transformed, hard tactile sensations also turn soft, and even reddish color transforms into white rice—to cite one instance is to illustrate them all. Moreover, flavors directly benefit the body, which is why transformation is discussed; the others do not directly benefit it, so transformation is not discussed.
