Some say: When the treatise says they lack it, it means they lack coarse fragrances; now when it says they have it, they have subtle fragrances. Some say: This is because things adhere to their substance, therefore there is fragrance; the nature of gold and silver itself lacks fragrance. For example, wind fundamentally has no color, but the 'Avalokiteśvara Chapter' says, 'Supposing a black gale blows wherever it goes', thus acquiring this name; here it is also like this. Now I say that it is identical to the above refutation of the Abhidharma doctrine: practitioners of the Hīnayāna have dull faculties and do not know their heavenly fragrances, whereas great beings know them.
