From 'At that time Maitreya' onward is the second: directly raising the question. First he sets forth the intent of the question, and next he speaks to pose the question directly. The direct question has two parts: first, posing the question directly; next, requesting an answer. Posing the question directly has two parts: first, the brief inquiry in prose; next, the extensive inquiry in verse. Within the prose it is again divided into two: first, questioning the first two signs together; second, questioning the subsequent sign of radiance. Because the first two signs are both external signs, and are both the dependent fruit and manifested by mental karma, they are called 'marks of supernatural powers'; therefore they are combined into one question. Emitting radiance is an internal sign, and is both the primary fruit and bodily karma; therefore it forms another [question]. Within the sign of radiance, first it clarifies the manifestation of the sign, and from 'all saw' below it clarifies witnessing the sign. From 'Thereupon Maitreya' onward is the second: clarifying the extensive inquiry in verse.
