The Fahua lun says: "Taking the sūtra as a whole from beginning to end, there are five kinds: first, alarm and dread of harm, meaning that people of the Hīnayāna cling to the Hīnayāna nirvāṇa as ultimate and slander the Mahāyāna nirvāṇa, thereby harming the great; this is called alarm and dread of harm. Second, alarm and dread of manifold matters: people of the Mahāyāna, hearing that the Buddha path is long in time and broad in practice, give rise to the mind of grasping the Hīnayāna fruit. Third, alarm and dread of inversions, which refers to non-Buddhists positing a self and what belongs to a self, who, upon hearing this sūtra's twofold selflessness of persons and phenomena, give rise to a mind of alarm and dread. Fourth, alarm and dread of regret, such as Śāriputra regretting having realized the Hīnayāna fruit; this mind of regret is called alarm and dread. Fifth, alarm and dread of deception, meaning that people of overweening pride form this thought: 'How could the Buddha deceive and delude us?' This is called alarm and dread of deception." These five completely encompass the matters of great and small, ordinary and holy, internal and external.
