Third, broadly clarifying the Buddha's deeds, there are three wheels: first, knowing others' minds; second, manifesting supernatural powers; third, expounding the teaching gate. These three wheels leave no Buddha deed ungathered and no living being unconverted. Yet the first section of the sūtra unifies the teachings of the five vehicles to return to the ekayāna, termed the wheel of expounding the Dharma; the latter section of the sūtra clarifies extending or contracting at will, and adapting long or short lifespans to convert, which is the wheel of supernatural powers. Hence the earlier text says, "It is to expound the Buddha's wisdom that the Buddhas appear in the world," and a later chapter of the sūtra says, "the Tathāgata's secret supernatural power," which are its proof.
