The first section has three parts: first, clarifying that he preached the triyāna because he accorded with and conformed to the past Buddhas; second, that he preached the triyāna because he received the encouragement of the present Buddhas of the ten directions; third, having received this encouragement, that he preached the triyāna because he complied with the sentient beings of the five defilements. The first two above conform to the Buddhas, while the last one below accords with sentient beings; these are the three causes and conditions for preaching the triyāna. If one includes responding to the Brahmā King's request, there are four conditions. The first verse has two parts: the first half is contemplating the ancient Buddhas; the second half clarifies that Śākyamuni conformed to the path and Dharma of the ancient Buddhas, and seeing that transforming sentient beings with the ekayāna could not succeed, he therefore preached three within the ekayāna. Śākyamuni trusted and loved antiquity, so he appropriately conformed to it.
