Two meanings may be furnished: First, because he addresses three types of capacities, he expounds the three teachings. In the past, sentient beings once dwelt in defiled lands and were entangled in manifold sufferings, and therefore grew weary of them and wished to extinguish them; though weary of them and wishing for extinction, their natures could not be immediately redirected, so even upon being born in a pure land, he expounds the triyāna in accordance with their original natures. Just as those who weary of Śākyamuni's defiled land are born in Maitreya's pure land—their defiled mind has changed, yet their three natures have not shifted, so Maitreya, appearing in a pure land, also expounds the triyāna. Second, although Śāriputra's land lacks the three capacities, he expounds the teaching of the triyāna simply for bodhisattvas to propagate and transform other regions. Although there are two meanings, the latter meaning is primary; hence below it merely lists bodhisattvas, and there is no assembly of the three vehicles.
