Adepts may completely sever the ninety-eight latent afflictions, but the reason it now mentions being freed from various views is that both trainees and adepts sever them. Because the view of self is the root of all views, it is singled out. Thus the *Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra* says, “Just as the view of self subsumes the sixty-two views.” The views of existence and non-existence are annihilationism and eternalism, meaning extreme views. “And so forth” takes up the remaining three views. Furthermore, “and so forth” takes up the three views as well as the remaining dull latent afflictions.
