Regarding "it had only one gate": third, this narrates the gate of teaching. The teachings spoken by the ninety-six kinds [of non-Buddhists] are all unable to bring escape from birth and death, and are therefore called "different gates"; only by relying on the Buddha's teaching can one escape suffering, hence it is called "one gate." This is in contrast to the non-Buddhists as different, and thus the Buddha's teaching is designated as "one"; this generally parables the teachings of both the Mahāyāna and the Hīnayāna, collectively called the "one Buddhist teaching." Regarding "many people": fourth, this explains the people who are transformed. The categories of sentient beings in the three realms are luxuriantly manifold, hence it says "many people." "One hundred" parables devas, "two hundred" parables humans, "up to five hundred" broadly takes the three wretched destinies; asuras are sometimes separated and sometimes combined, hence it says "up to."
