From 'At that time, the children' downward is the third [part]: the parable of the children receiving transformation. This is a parable for the earlier statement, 'There were then the distinct names of arhat, Dharma, and Saṅgha,' referring to the people of the triyāna receiving benefit. As for 'Because it suited their desires,' having known their capacities before speaking, the teaching necessarily matched their capacities, and so it says 'suited their desires.' As for 'Their hearts were each courageous and sharp,' the preceding clarified that the teaching matched their capacities, while this clarifies that their capacities believed the teaching; having given rise to faithful minds, they immediately wished to cultivate and practice, which is meant by 'courageous and sharp.' 'Courageous' means striving to advance; 'sharp' means keen. As for 'pushing and jostling one another,' the preceding already clarified their faithful minds, while this clarifies earnest vigor. As for 'vying together in racing forward,' the above already clarified vigor, while this directly clarifies contemplating the principle of the Four Noble Truths. Contemplating suffering and severing the origin is like vying together in racing forward; realizing cessation and cultivating the Path is likened to scrambling to exit the burning house. Some say: 'Their hearts were each courageous and sharp' clarifies the stage of external ordinary beings, namely the first three expedients among the seven expedients—the stages of wisdom arising from hearing and contemplation. 'Pushing and jostling one another' refers to the stage of internal ordinary beings, namely the four roots of goodness—the stage of wisdom arising from cultivation. 'Vying together in racing forward' is the stage of trainees of the three fruits. 'Scrambling to exit the burning house' is the stage of adepts. Thus, ordinary beings have internal and external, and holy beings have trainees and adepts.
