As for 'Now they are outside the gate,' the gate refers to the house. Setting up these three carriages outside of birth and death alike—why is this so? Although the three fruits differ, their sense of exhausting delusion is the same, so they are alike outside the gate. Furthermore, the dharmas attained by people of the triyāna refer to the unconditioned [state attained by] analytical cessation and the two knowledges: kṣayajñāna and anutpādajñāna. The Commentary on the Sūtra says: 'Six dharmas constitute the substance of the holy fruit: namely the five uncontaminated aggregates and the unconditioned [state attained by] analytical cessation, all of which are outside birth and death. However, an arhat's retribution body is actually within the realm. If the person is subsumed under the dharma, one may also call the arhat one who has exited outside the realm; if the dharma is subsumed under the person, since the person is within the realm, one may also say that the arhat is within the three realms. If the body and the dharma are differentiated, then they pertain to both inside and outside. The uncontaminated state attained in the first fruit is not a dharma bound by the three realms; other cases can be understood by analogy with this.' As for 'You may play and sport with them,' this clarifies the purpose of using the carriages. A doubter says: If they are causal yānas, they may serve to transport one out of the three realms; now that one has already exited the three realms, what use is there for carriages? Therefore it is explained: You may play and sport with them; 'to play and sport' means to take delight. Going back and forth in birth and death, galloping through the five destinies, treading through hardship and distress—in comparison to that, the holy fruit is therefore called 'playing and sporting.' From 'You [all should quickly come out] of this [burning house]' downward is the third [phrase]: exhorting them to come out quickly. He causes the people of the triyāna to exert diligent vigor to quickly sever afflictions and attain exit from the three realms. It is actually going out, yet speaks of 'coming out,' because looking from inside to outside is 'going,' while looking from outside to inside is 'coming.' From 'according to what you desire' downward is the fourth [phrase]: clarifying the guarantee of bestowal without falsehood.
