Next, explaining belief and understanding combined, there are briefly two meanings: first, contrasting with what is above; second, comparing with what is below. Contrasting with what is above: understanding is of two kinds: first, seeing-understanding; second, belief-understanding. Relying little on the master's teachings and seeing much of the principle through one's own sentiment is like the bodhisattvas; hence the "Parable Chapter" says: "If there are bodhisattvas who in this assembly can single-mindedly listen to the real Dharma of the Buddhas," this is called seeing-understanding. Relying much on the master's teachings and seeing little of the principle through one's own sentiment, as the previous text says: "The remaining śrāvakas, because of believing the Buddha's words, are able to enter this sūtra; it is not the domain of their own wisdom," is belief-understanding. Now, in contrast to the seeing-understanding of the bodhisattvas, the śrāvakas are designated as "belief-understanding". Second, comparing with what is below: belief has the meaning of certainty. Although their understanding is attained through the Buddha, their understanding mind is firm and clear, recognizing that the principle must be so, unlike the vague and loose understanding of ordinary people; hence it is called "belief and understanding".
