From "the poor son saw his father" onward, third, it explains that the son saw his father, did not recognize him, and gave rise to an attitude of avoidance and fear. Principle being able to subdue sentiment is called having great authority and power; sentiment dreading principle is like immediately harboring terror. As for "regretting having come to this place," when a lesser capacity encounters the great, advancing brings no merit of entering principle, while retreating incurs the fault of disobeying the teaching; hence it is called regret. As for "this is perhaps a king or the equal of a king," converting beings with supernatural powers at will is like a king; converting beings by preaching the Dharma is like the equal of a king. These are still just the two items of the robe-lap and the stool mentioned above. Some say: the dharmakāya is like a king, and the saṃbhogakāya is like the equal of a king. As for "this is not a place for me to hire out my labor to gain things," the Mahāyāna path is profound and its principle transcendent; it is not a place to cultivate the five precepts and ten virtues to obtain the items of the minor fruits of humans and devas. As for "it would be better to go to a poor village, where there is room to exert my labor," the preceding explained the inability to receive the great, while this now explains that he is only fit to practice the small. The vehicle of humans and devas belongs to saṃsāra, without the supramundane noble fruits; this is the "poor village." "Exerting labor" means exerting effort freely. The retributions of the five desires are like food and clothing; seeking the bliss of the minor fruits is not difficult, so it is called "easy to obtain." As for "if I remain here long, I might be coerced and forced to work," this explains that a lesser capacity should not uphold the great teaching; if he upholds the great teaching, the teaching will not match the capacity. Opposing sentiment is coercion; what is not enjoyable is being forced to work. As for "having had this thought, he ran away quickly," turning away from principle and complying with sentiment is in meaning like collapsing and fleeing; hence it says "ran away quickly."
