The two vehicles see that there are afflictions that can arise, and therefore cultivate understanding to extinguish them. This is arising and perishing, annihilation and permanence, and therefore base, like a person who clears away dung. A bodhisattva completely realizes that delusion originally does not arise and now does not perish either, which is called the contemplation of non-arising and non-perishing; therefore in clearing away there is nothing to clear away, and they are not dung-clearers. Therefore the Expedient Means Chapter says: "All phenomena from their origin are constantly characterized by quiet extinction." The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa Sūtra says: "It is only for persons of overweening pride that it is taught to cut off the three poisons." For those without overweening pride, the three poisons are themselves liberation, so there is nothing to cut off.
